Stock Lake area footprint
This Missouri
Ozark lake area mirrors the Finger Lake area of upper New York
State. That, too, was rather slow in developing. It was hit with
the closing of the Corning Glass Company. Each of those three
Finger Lakes now do a brisk business.
There are
good reasons to buy and build here. Stockton Lake
is awaking from its deep sleep. Development in both Cedar and
Dade County has escalated since the 2000 census. The old data
has not caught more recent progress:
- In addition to
a growing tourist population, area businesses continue their
upward growth. Downtown Stockton has various building
projects. Three are in the government office area; six are
retail development, ten are residential construction, and
four are private and/or financial improvements.
- Two major manufacturing facilities:
Superior Gearbox & Hammon’s Products Co., which is the
world’s largest producer of black walnuts. The County
hospital in El Dorado Springs offers a full range of medical
services.
- A new visitor’s information center
was completed in September, ’05 with design and development
for additional office space and exhibits. At Stockton Lake
State Park, there is a marina, lodging, boat rentals and a
sailing school. You are able to fly into the Stockton
Municipal airport; call the Pilots’ Quarters at
1-417-276-7620 for details. And you can have your own
fishing or hunting guide.
- The area around Stockton Lake has a
lake association: The Stockton Lake Association. The
association provides general information, advertising,
special events, various maps, etc. An active web site
maintains current data:
www.stocktonlake.com
- From the Corp of Engineering web
site,"
More than
400 private concessionaires, with gross fixed assets of $225
million, operate supporting facilities and services at Corps
lakes, such as marinas, bait shops, and grocery stores.
Corps properties also play an important role in drawing new
residents, particularly senior citizens to an area, and can
help build a stronger sense of community identity. Corps
hydropower plants have low operating costs and are immune to
rising fossil fuel prices, making them one of the least
costly sources of electric power available today. As a
result, these plants are playing a significant role in
keeping electricity costs affordable for consumers, creating
a positive impact on the economy. As concerns about the
nation's limited energy resources grow, the Corps is working
to increase hydropower output, efficiency, and reliability
by upgrading and modernizing its facilities. Approximately
two to three facilities per year are being renovated."
